RADICALS & ELECTIONS

John Papworth

The recent UK election makes glaringly obvious the almost total intellectual incoherence of contemporary political activism across the entire spectrum of opinion.

Prime Minister Blair has assured himself a place in history by creating a brand new 'Tory Party' even more Tory than his erstwhile rivals.

The old 'Tories' under Hague are being compelled to dither on 'Europe' whilst supporting the globalisation of our economic and social-life into private profit-seeking hands.

The 'Liberal Democrats' do the same and even embrace the europlot.

None of them talk sense on anything relevant to the crisis of our times.

The 'Green Party' has some good policies...but so did Stalin and old Labour...but does not grasp that in terms of political campaigning the key issue is not one of policy statements but of the structure and power of party organisation.

People are learning fast that a mass democracy is an oxymoron, but not fast enough, and simpletons of all colours, including green, persist in believing a mass party structure can be promoted which its members can control in order to achieve positive results.

It will be a major task of 'The Radical Consultation' to make the imperatives behind these illusions clear and to promote those parameters of thought which will answer what has become a key problem of civilised existence: how to make power democratic and answerable to the people.
